Homework
Homework will be handled a little differently this year. Your student will have a colored homework folder. He or she will have a specific day of the week when homework is due.
Homework Schedule:
Due Mondays: Red Folder
Due Tuesdays: Orange Folder
Due Wednesdays: Blue Folder
Due Thursdays: Green Folder
Students will be expected to bring their homework home in their folder, and then return the homework on their assigned day. If a student is absent on the due date, the homework may be turned in the following day.
Homework will be a combination of a Dialogue Journal and a Reading Log. Some students will also receive a Fry High Frequency Word practice page. Each teacher is also free to give individual homework based on individual student needs. Please be prepared to initial the monthly reading log included in your student's homework folder for every night of reading.
Each week, all students are expected to read or be read to at least 20 minutes per day. Most students still need to read with a parent on a regular basis until at least third grade. Parental guidance and support is still very important at this stage of your student's education. Reading with your child is a great way to develop a love of reading, and a closer parent-child relationship. If a parent is not available, older siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents are other rich sources of learning for your student.
The Dialogue Journal will be independent writing as a "conversation" between the student and his or her teacher. Please allow students to complete this activity independently. We, as teachers, use this journal as a way to assess writing ability, and application of spelling pattern and sight words learned in class. Dialogue Journals are also be a way to develop a relationship between student and teacher through letter and comment writing.
Homework is an important practice part of skills students are learning in class. Completion of homework counts toward the privilege of attending Chargers Ignite once per quarter.
Thank you!
